Substandard Submeters? Ditch the Subpar for the Superb

You know you’re officially an expert in utility management when innovative metering systems get you excited and submeters are the cherry on top. These small but mighty devices provide granular insights into energy, water, and gas usage, helping property owners and residents alike take control of their consumption. And the latest news in submetering proves that they’re only becoming more essential.

Regulations & Incentives on the Rise

Submeters have historically been popular with residents and students, so it’s no surprise that cities and states are increasingly pushing for the expansion of it. In California, new multifamily developments must now install water submeters in individual units, reinforcing resident-responsible utility billing under Senate Bill 7.

Meanwhile, New York is expanding submetering requirements with Local Law 88, mandating submeters in large resident spaces by 2025 to improve energy efficiency and billing transparency. Texas is also advancing submeter adoption, with the Public Utility Commission ensuring fair billing practices for multifamily properties.

With more regulations and incentives emerging, submeters are becoming essential for equitable billing and sustainable resource management.

Happy Resident, Happy Life

Property owners aren’t the only ones benefiting from submeters. Residents love it too. Because they only pay for their actual usage, residents know that their bill reflects their fair share. And they can control that fair share however they deem fit. This increase in transparency and trust ultimately leads to resident retention. When people feel empowered and treated equitably, they’re more likely to stick around.

The Future is Fair

Submeters aren’t just about splitting utility bills—they’re about promoting conservation, improving efficiency, and giving consumers control over their usage. As regulations and technology continue to evolve, submetering is proving to be anything but subpar.

Is your property keeping up with the latest in submetering? Now might be the perfect time to explore the benefits!
